Austria

Lech

At the Steinmahd, at 2300m, there is a snow base of 170cm and on the local Lech slopes the base is just short of a metre, at 95 cm.

The new snow that fell over the weekend coupled with the low temperatures now being experienced has left the pistes in an absolutely fantastic condition. It has also refreshed the unpisted diamond ski trails that can be found throughout the region to offer a challenge to the more adventurous skier.

A fantastic variety of terrain is available on the 255km of pisted slopes. The runs above Zurs continue to offer some of the best snow conditions in the area.

Today has started bright with beautiful clear skies and a very cold temperatures. Some cloud is forecast to move in later in the day with possible light snow showers. Winds are expected to increase to moderate from the east. Tomorrow (Wednesday) is expected to be overcast with some light snow in the afternoon becoming heavier into the evening. The snow is expected to continue into Thursday. Temperatures will remain low. The Arlburg hotel offers live music with its “Bar Rock and Roll” this Wednesday.

And fro novelty value - try riding the two wheel stand up sensation machine, the Segway, on a tour through Lech with an instructor / guide any evening throughout the week.

Obergurgl

The snow depth has reached 156cm at the top of the mountain with 48cm on the local runs of the resort.

Another beautiful day dawns over the charming village of Hochgurgl and with it brings another brilliant day of skiing to this alpine paradise. The fresh snow that fell over the weekend has led to soft, powdery conditions in the resort, which should be set to continue for the next few days.

Runs that are slightly more sheltered from the wind, such as red run 28, black run 32 and red run 25 promise to be fantastic for the week to come. The sun is shining and the skies are blue throughout the Obergurgl and Hochgurgl ski area. This clear weather is expected to continue until tomorrow morning, when light snow is forecast to fall. Snow showers should continue until the weekend, when heavier snow is expected.

Temperatures today are well below freezing, with a low of minus 14 degrees Celcius forecast for this evening, however temperatures should become much milder over the coming days.

An experience that is not to be missed, for those who crave adventure, is tobogganing in Hochgurgl! The toboggan follows run 25 from the mid-station of the Hochgurglbahn to the bottom, spanning just over 3 kilometres from top to bottom. And if that’s not thrill seeking enough for you, you can always try night tobogganing! Every Monday and Thursday evening from 7.30pm to 10.30pm you can night ski and toboggan down under the floodlights, definitely not one for the faint of heart!

St Anton

There is superb snow depth at the top of Valluga of 240cm and on the lower slopes of St Anton there is a depth of 70 cm.

A decent snowfall last week has improved the already fantastic skiing conditions here in St Anton and the pistes are in great condition due to the large snowfalls.

The sunshine may disappear for a while on Thursday so make sure to make the most of Tuesday and Wednesday.

If the weather is sunny in the morning try skiing up the Rendl Gondola as this side of the mountain receives a lot of the morning sunshine. Then make your way down to town and stop off for some lunch at one of the many fantastic restaurants St Anton has to offer.

In the afternoon consider Skiing down to Stuben. It is often less busy than St. Anton leaving fresher snow and quieter pistes. The off piste down in Stuben is also very good.

The start of the week will be nice and bright sunshine making perfect skiing conditions. There may be a few snow showers on Wednesday and a high possibility of heavy snow on Thursday. However, it appears to brighten up again on Friday with some sunny spells making good conditions for skiing once again.

The pistes continue to be relatively peaceful but the après bars are as lively as ever with the infamous Mooserwirt and Krazy Kangaruh competing for attention.

The resort’s own Ski Show is being held once again this week on Wednesday. This is a really fun event and is always a great crowd pleaser. The show starts at 9pm.

France

Avoriaz

The snow depth on the upper Portes du Soleil slopes is a great 210cm with the local Avoriaz runs having a depth of 170cm.

The ski conditions at the moment are good after receiving a fresh dusting of snow late last week and a all round much needed temperature drop the pistes are looking excellent all across the ski area.

With over 2 meters of snow at the top of resort the entire ski area is currently open with 100% of the pistes which includes 50 in Avoriaz alone as well as 7 powder fields to be explored for those more interested in freestyle skiing there is a super pipe, 2 boarder cross, 3 snow parks and the famous Burton sponsored ‘Stash’ terrain park there is a huge amount for all levels.

The snow forecast for today and the next three days is predicting 10cm of snow with light snow/ snow showers all day everyday. Wind speeds are average today with speeds between 10-15km/h however wind speeds drop to a more bearable 5km/h on Wednesday evening.

Temperatures on average over the next 3 days are between -5 and -14 during the day time and dropping as low as -19 Friday night, at night wind speeds are due to bring the temperature down as low as -25 at night aswell.

This week in resort there is a ski rally around the Avoriaz ski area, as well as a freestyle ski competition sponsored by ‘Gore tex’ for professional and amateur riders.

Courchevel 1650

The Three Valleys has a snow depth of 130cm at 2700m and 114 cm at Courchevel 1850m.

Isn’t it just great when the weather report is wrong! Instead of clouds and snow showers, yesterday skiers in Courchevel were treated to one of the bluest days ever seen and beautiful snow conditions all over the mountain.

Although sometimes very cold, the superb conditions appeared to warm everyone up as they came back raving about the gorgeous weather and amazing quality of snow all over the resort, surely among the best if not the best snow conditions in the Alps.

This morning the weather again seems to be conspiring with us to provide ideal conditions in which to get out and get skiing with minimal cloud cover and perfectly groomed slopes ready for the morning.

Sunny spells forecast for today with cloud and light snow for Wednesday and Thursday. Despite the absence of sun forecast for Wednesday and Thursday it is expected to warm up a bit which will help on the chairlifts. The main event of the week will be the conclusion of The International Festival of Pyrotechnical Art on Thursday evening in 1850 which promises to go out with a Bang (literally).

This week is an ideal opportunity to try out some moves on the Freestyle Big Air bag ready to catch you when you rather than if you fall (trying a 360!).

Les Arcs

There is a depth of snow reaching 210cm at the Aiguille Rouge at 3300m and at Les Arcs 2000 where our chalets are located the snow depth is 140cm.

The last two weeks have both seen large dumps of snow with additional sprinklings, to ensure that every run has firm, well pisted runs to offer. Even into March Villaroger is still snow covered meaning all of Les Arcs is available. Runs of the peak down towards Vallandry all the way to 1600 offer great snow conditions meaning the crowds are dispersed and if you know where to go you can have a run all to yourself.

The forecast for the next few days is for snow showers over the next day or so and then light snow for the rest of the weekend.

For the first time this season the flying kilometre is open to the public which has people excited either to watch or see if they have the nerve to give a go for themselves. In addition the X-Games being just across the valley has skiers and boarders keen to try a few tricks in the park.

09/03/10

Les Gets

At the highest point of Les Gets (2002m) there is currently 150cm of snow. The amount of snow at 1172m is 75cm.

The conditions this week have been amazing so far. Yesterday the weather was fantastic with clear skies and bright sunshine all day. The temperatures this week are getting lower (averaging -10), meaning the snow is being kept in wonderful condition….make sure you wrap up well on the slopes!

A particularly enjoyable run was Rein De Pres that is a lovely long blue run from the top of La Rosta. There is also a great restaurant at the top with amazing views, perfect for a clear sunny day.

The weather over the next three days is set to bring a mixture of sunshine and snow. Today it is currently sunny in resort; the sunshine is set to continue all morning moving way to snow showers this afternoon. Light snow is due to fall all day on Wednesday with a total of 2cm and temperatures dropping to -12 in the evening. Thursday morning will bring sunshine and cloud, and snow in the afternoon with a total of 2cm. More snow is due later in the week with 2cm forecast on Friday and a further 3cm on Saturday.

09/03/10

Meribel

There is 130 cm of snow on the upper slopes and 95 cm on the home runs to Meribel.

The conditions are lovely at the moment and I can’t wait to get out there!! The pistes have a generous covering of snow and the lift queues are back to normal now that the French holidays are over. The off-piste could do with a fresh layer of powder but there is still a lot that has not been tracked out. All the links to the other valleys have been open this week and because the piste has been in such good conditions, guests have been finding it easy to cover a lot of ground.

Beautiful sunshine today but with dropping temperatures, as low as -18 at 3000m. Tomorrow not so nice with clouds heading in and a chance of more snow, and those low temperature staying. Sunday will be warmer, only -6 at resort level but with higher winds and light snow.

Meribel Alpina have opened the Roc de Fer and the Olympic Express early 3 mornings a week so guests have a chance to ski first tracks. This also includes breakfast at the top of the mountain over looking Meribel. Only a few more weeks until the Little World festival as well and the resort is really starting to get excited. All the acts have now been announced and the tickets are on sale from next week.

05/03/10

Tignes

The snow depth is 198cms at the top of the Grande Motte and 126cms on the lower slopes of Tignes.

As predicted, we kicked off Monday with a glorious day of bright sunshine with no clouds at all. The snow on the slopes was soft and smooth with no icy patches, carving up the mountain was fantastic as the reps and their guests went down to Val Claret and up the funicular to the Glacier, where spectacular views and almost no wind at all greeted them at the top. The day was spent enjoying wide open easy skiing and everyone finished on a very happy note.

This morning has started again with bright sunshine, and as the sun climbs the sky, golden sunlight licks the face of the Espace Killy mountainside once again. The next two days are predicted to bring with them a top up of snow, which is always helpful and no doubt will continue to maintain the always perfect pistes in Tignes.

In Tignes this week, people are talking about only one thing, You guessed it! The first ever European Winter X-Games. With the course now fully set up and the half pipe groomed to perfection, excitement is electric and teams of people are beginning to arrive in resort to compete for the grand prize.

09/03/10

Val D'isere

The snow depth reaches 198cm at the top of the Pissaillas glacier with 126cm on the lower Espace Killy slopes.

The resort woke up to clear blue skies again this morning after a cracking Monday. The pisteurs have been working hard at grooming the runs so they are in the best condition they could be: smooth, flat and very skiable.

Piste L is one of the favourites at the moment, in this kind of weather it is a sundrenched canyon, and the snow on the Roches from the top of the glacier is on perfect cruising form. Snow is forecast mid-week which will be ideal!

A mixture of clear skies and some much needed fresh snow to freshen up the off piste areas. Temperatures are remaining cold but bearable so the snow is going no where, and ice is nowhere to be seen.

It’s all about the Winter X-Games this week!! It’s the talk of the town and the excitement is positively tangible. From the giant half pipe and the enormous kickers down the side of the Double M piste, to the promotion tents in the middle of Val Claret, the Tignes is looking well prepared for the arrival of the world’s best extreme sportsmen and women. Roll on Wednesday!

09/03/10

Val Thorens

There is 180cm of snow on the Glacier Du Bouchet, at 3200m, and the local slopes have 120cm at 2300m.

The pistes around Val Thorens have been well maintained over the last few days despite the weather being against us! But things are looking good as the sun is due to be shining during the day, with light snow overnight for the next few days, and some snow welcomed on Wednesday.

While the days are sunny runs in Orelle, like Peyron and Bouchet, are going to be in great shape, and be catching the sun all day! Any other high runs are also strongly recommended, such as Tete Ronde and Christine off the Peclet Lift, and Mont de la Chambre off Bouqetin.

Should the weather turn on Wednesday, the skiing further down the valley, near Saint Martin and Les Menuires is going to be better, especially the run Jerusalem. If you would like to explore off piste in the area, I highly recommend Thursday and Friday, when the sun will hopefully be shining, and we’ll have all that lovely powder from Wednesday.

A light covering of new snow is forecast, mostly falling Tuesday night and Wednesday. Temperatures are going to be well below freezing, -8’c to -16’c, so remember your layers! But fortunately little wind chill, due to light winds. We’re in jazz mode in Val Thorens, with the Jazz festival being on every night this week from 7pm! We’ve got BMW here showcasing their 4 wheel drive vehicle, and K2 showing off their latest products as well! We’ve got all the usually adrenaline pumping activities, like the night time toboggan run, and the mountain biking on snow, and a newcomer to the ranks: the ‘WAXX’ snow park contest this Friday!

Italy

Selva

The snow base is 221cm at the top of the Marmolada with 70cm on the lower Sella Ronda slopes.

Once again the weather in Selva is completely the opposite as what is being forecasted. Predicted snow showers overnight were meant to hit Val Gardena but nothing arrived, so this morning we are blessed once again by the beautiful sunshine, with that crisp morning fresh air, the same we’ve had for the past four days.

The sun is managing to maintain the pistes by keeping away any ice, and allowing the powder that’s left to remain soft despite there being a cold wind blowing daily and meaning the temperatures are a little low. Our guests ventured out to Plan de Gralba yesterday where the long, evergreen trees and the wide gentle red runs allowed them to get their skiing feet back into gear.

On the other side of the Dantercepies, the panoramic views of skiing in between two mountains are all lit up by the sun, making that area of the Gardena valley one of the most popular with skiers. The wide blue and red runs, which are perfectly pisted and topped with a light dusting of snow gives you a sense of well being and confidence to carry on further with your skiing, despite the little bit of chill in the air or any feeling of tiredness.

There seems to be no signs of any moguls as the piste bashers continue to work hard and maintain the runs coming down off the Ciampinoi, either heading down the famous World Cup run (Sasslong) or simply heading back into Selva. The Marmolada is once again a must-see if you are in Selva this week as with the forecasts predicting snow (again), there seems to be a rush of getting up to the 3250m to see the gorgeous views, which can’t be seen from anywhere else in the Dolomites.

Still the forecast of light snow from late Tuesday night all the way through to the end of the week with 9cm of fresh snow expected in the next 48 hours. A mid westerly wind of around -20˚ will stick around until Thursday with temperatures between -6˚ and -14˚.

Yesterday saw ‘Ladies day’ hit Selva, with the male Go-Go dancers hitting one of the main bars in town. Some of the men showed their appreciation by dressing up, topped with kisses, affection and even flowers. The local women along with our guests and staff are trying to extend the day into Ladies Week, which got a bleak response from the male contingents of Selva.

Topped with ladies day, it was the turn for Ski 2000’s ski show, which included instructors skiing on one ski, three instructors on the same ski, tandem flying, freestyle skiers and boarders as well as a skidoo versus skier race. There was a big turn out, despite it being a little chilly but the warm taste of free Glühwein meant that everyone was happy.

On Wednesday we will see ‘skijoring’ in the afternoon in Vallunga. Skijoring is the Norwegian name for ski driving. In Selva at 16:30, down in the area where the cross country runs are, skijoring with horses will take place. Something which could be highly entertaining and fun.

Also on Wednesday for all you football fanatics, it’s the next leg of the Champions League match between Manchester United and AC Milan. With most of the locals supporting either Inter or AC, the bars fill up quite quickly and are always entertaining to say the least.

Switzerland

Saas Fee

From Allalin all the way to mid station the slopes are thick with fresh powder! The big fall of snow yesterday covered the mountain from top to bottom in deep powder making the entire mountain great fun to ride.

The bright sunshine and crystal clear blue skies make for breathtaking views at the top of the mountain and warm ski days all the way back to Saas Fee.

At the mid stations around Morenia both on and off piste, there is deep snow and also very well bashed pistes. The big wide rolling red runs and twisting blues that lead down to resort are a real joy to ride with the soft snow making you feel like your floating along the pistes. In the snow park this week, a new step up has been installed on an old gondola car and many new jibs/ rails to play on.

With 143cm at 2500m it is an amazing place to ski. Langfluh and Plattjen are covered in bright sunshine throughout the day as usual, and deep snow makes these runs great to ride. The yellow runs down from these lift stations are in particularly good condition with the deep snow allowing you to makes big sweeping turns all the way down to resort.

In Saas Fee resort the rooftops have had a lovely top up of powder keeping them gleaming in the sunshine! The heavier snow showers further up the mountain have laid a beautiful soft powder layer both on and off piste, making the entire mountain a wonderful place to ski. The beaming sunshine warms the air in resort and makes for some fantastic skiing.

The next few days will be sunny, with cloud moving in over the weekend and snow showers. Highs of -1 degrees and lows of -21 degrees with wind chill (at Allalin).

The glacier downhill mountain bike race is to begin tomorrow and the adrenaline in the glacier village Saas Fee is flowing.

With competitors from all over Europe getting their last few practice runs in today and early tomorrow, the event is really causing people to talk in Saas Fee and the surrounding areas.

The mountain biker will not be riding on roads or tracks but on ice and snow! They will have to battle extremely high speeds, conquer the lack of traction on the glacier whilst negotiating a difficult course and competing for the win.

The riders must master the 1800m decent in a very short time and then approach the village of Saas Fee at break neck speeds for the finish.

05/03/10

Verbier

Friday brought lots of fresh snow to Verbier, making conditions excellent for the weekend with Saturday, Sunday and Monday all being beautiful clear days.

In Verbier itself, at 1500m, snow depth is 20cm. By 2200 the depth increases to 153cm and up at the top at 3000m there is 185cm of snow.

Friday’s snowfall has left a nice thin layer of snow on the slopes leaving them smooth and fast. This along with the weekend’s sunshine has meant that the conditions at all levels of the mountain are excellent. The clear skies have also meant that the temperature has dropped and with all the lifts in the area now open, there’s plenty to explore.

The forecast for this week is set to be mostly light snow showers which will be great for the pistes. Higher levels in resort will see sunny spells with intermittent snowfall. Temperatures look to remain low.

The world famous DJ Mylo appeared in Verbier this weekend. He played at the Farinet bar on Friday evening. Fans of the DJ partied well into the early hours of Sunday morning.

09/03/10

Zermatt

The snow depth is132cm at the top of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise with 22cm in resort.

90% of the runs in the resort are open including all of the main pisted runs and the links to Cervinia. The runs closed are still some of the yellow off piste itinerary runs and the few short runs at the top of the glacier used for summer.

The cold weather and the recent top up of fresh snow has ensured that the snow on the pistes remains in superb condition. This is especially true at altitude and the blue runs at Furggsattel, the runs at Riffelberg and those from Rothorn Paradise and Blauherd are all a joy to ski. Off-piste is still a little varied with everyone searching out the pockets of windblown powder around areas as Triftji and among the trees at Sunnegga.

Tuesday has started with bright sunshine and a clear but cold morning is on the cards. It is forecast to cloud over this afternoon with the prospect of some light snow overnight. Wednesday and Thursday are both expected to be cloudy with the possibility of more light snow, mostly in the afternoon and early evening.

The mountain top hotel at the top of the Gornergrat railway hosts a starlight dinner this evening. Wednesday night sees more live music at Nelly’s bar.
